Lowe Roche - Digital: From the Intern Desk: Fast Weeks, Firsts, & Fun Nervousness

With the G20 craziness (which was going on right outside our office, hence the picture) and then Canada Day, the past two weeks have been short, busy, and have flown by! There were a few firsts for me, including my first off-site client visit, first agency-wide brainstorm (where I actually had some input!), and my first earthquake experience (we’re always shaking things up here at Lowe Roche! …Sorry, bad pun).

My first off-site client meeting was honestly the coolest experience I’ve had in my career, albeit very short, up to this point. We are doing some work with Roots Canada, and I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to go on the leather factory tour with a few others from the agency. We spent a couple hours there, gaining product/factory/brand knowledge, and met with Michael Budman himself – an extremely passionate and impressive person. I gained a lot from meeting him and seeing the inner workings of his business – it was all very inspiring. (It was also pretty sweet how he hooked us up with some product too, I won’t lie!) I’m super excited to be on this account, and look forward to the work we will be doing with them. In fact, within 24 hours of getting the account, we were delivering creative to the client, which I feel says a lot about what kind of agency this is.

Last week, I was part of a full-agency meeting, where I actually had the chance to speak up and pitch a creative concept. It doesn’t sound like much, but it was a remarkable experience for me. Having just recently finished business school, I’m used to being the one leading the meetings, but now I’m at the bottom of the totem pole, so to speak. And honestly, I was a little nervous to voice my opinion in front of these creative minds that have been in the ad business for years. But I think I did an okay job, and am glad to have that practice under my belt. (It’s fun being a little nervous!) I believe this is another example of how this agency works – everyone, not just creatives, has the opportunity to be involved in the brainstorming process and everyone has a say. One major thing I’ve learned about this business so far is that a great idea can come from anywhere.

So thanks again for reading, and as always, please let me know if there is anything you want to hear from me in an upcoming blog post. Cheers!Lowe Roche - Digital

Cars like the R8 GT are why Audi is going to continue to make waves in the automotive world. Today in Ingolstadt they are announcing their 2009 numbers and for the umteenth time will fire a shot across BMW’s bow. After spending another couple days here immersed with our German and global colleagues, there is no doubt in my mind that Audi will be the most sought after brand in the category, if it’s not already, any day now. Last quarter they passed MB in global sales and look to do the same to BMW sooner than later. The technology in the cars is unsurpassed, the design is nothing short of breathtaking, and the drive will remind you of why you fell in love with your first car. So what are you waiting for? Go and get an Audi before everyone on your block has one. The GT may be a little hard to come by, but the A4 is a helluva car...Lowe Roche - Digital

Lowe Roche - Digital: Adobe®: We Love Choice

The $600 Flash authoring tool is the only way to produce Flash applications.

The free Mac OS X Developer tools (that require an $800+ Mac computer) are the only way to produce iPhone and iPad applications.

Both systems are as closed as each other.

Adobe claims Flash is open.

Apple makes no such claims. If you want to make iPhone or iPad apps you use Mac OS and Xcode, take it or leave it.

If you choose to leave it the alternative is HTML. A truly open platform for which authoring is as simple as editing text. There’s many HTML rendering engine implementations, the best few are totally open source with Apple being the major contributor to the best one, WebKit.

Adobe: not open, claim to be.

Apple: not open, don’t claim to be, contribute heavily to that which is truly open.

We like it when someone points out the facts. Lowe Roche - Digital

The dirty storm. You can imagine that this is what Steve Job’s office looked like yesterday when this exposé on the the iphone was posted.

Like vs. Become a Fan? Overall, brands may get more “likes” now that becoming a fan is not an option but, one has to wonder how meaningful it will be. Facebook has clarified that there’s no planned changes to the ad model —so forget about “behavioral ad targeting”, for now.

And finally, the real dirty storm! Fantastic captures of what’s happening with Eyjafjallajökull’s volcano eruption and ash flumes by a Mechanical Engineer based in Iceland. See full story: Lowe Roche - Digital

Lowe Roche - Digital: iAd and what it means to the rest of us (advertisers)
